A new set of leaflets covering Coleridge-inspired walks around Ottery St Mary and educational information about the poet's life and work, have been published by the Coleridge Memorial Project in time for the 2012 holiday season. The new leaflets will be distributed to key tourism outlets in East Devon and further afield beginning in March 2012, with the intention of attracting more visitors to Ottery in the summer months. The leaflets will complement the Kubla Khan Poetry Stones which will be installed in Canaan Way Park also in March.
Copies are available for inspection in the Information Centre, but CMP Chairman, Chris Wakefield, wants to remind anyone picking up copies that they will not be "live" until the Poetry Stones are installed. "We have to get everything done in good time for the 2012 season, so the support materials will all be in place in advance of the Poetry Stones. We hope this will help generate a sense of expectation and excitement for the installation and launch later this year. I do believe this is great step forward for Ottery's efforts to engage more fully with the internationally-renowned genius who was born here". In addition to the leaflets, there will also be exhibition materials developed for both a permanent display in the parish church and a portable version for use in a variety of venues as required. The opening ceremony for the stones is pencilled in for 28th April 2012, and Gazette readers will be kept informed of the details as they are firmed up. CMP members meet in February to report on progress and finalise the arrangements for the launch. The Coleridge Memorial Project is funded by Making it Local, a locally managed grants scheme in the Blackdown Hills and East Devon AONB areas incorporating funding from the EU, DEFRA and Leader. The Heritage Lottery Fund is the other major funder, awarding £10,000 to the project. The funds were topped up with local fundraising to ensure the project went forward. |
